About

This blog is meant to help raise the profile of the Vernon-Rockville community, offering information and personal perspectives on local issues, events, and businesses.  In the Vernon School Readiness Collaborative’s One-to-One campaign we heard a lot about access to information and resources, the need for caring and community between neighbors, the desire for a closer relationship between citizens and their government.  I hope this blog will become a community collaboration and a resource for Vernon-Rockville.

The Rockville Downtown Association, Inc. has several upcoming programs of interest for the community. On April 25, beginning at 7:00 p.m., the very popular “A Cappella Slam” will be taking place in the Performance Hall of the Vernon Senior Center. Now in its 7th year, the program has four collegiate a cappella singing groups compete in a ‘American Idol’ style competition. Each group gives a 20 minute presentation. The audience then votes on their favorite group and the winning team is invited back for an encore finale. Refreshments are provided and tickets are $20 per person. The A Cappella Slam is a sell-out each year and tickets may be purchased at the RDA office or at numerous locations in the historic downtown.

The “RDA Annual Downtown Spring Clean-up” is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2009 beginning at 10:00 a.m. and continuing until 2:00 p.m. Volunteers are asked to meet at the RDA office at 30 Park Street where they will be provided with clean-up supplies, trash bags, gloves, etc. The program is held each year and is an excellent way for community members to participate in helping the historic downtown beautification program sponsored by RDA.

Keep the 2nd Thursday of June, July, and August available to participate in the RDA’s annual “2nd Thursday Summer Music Concert Series” held at Central Park in the historic downtown. Music groups begin performing at 7:00 p.m. and continue until 8:30 p.m. Bring your own lawn chairs and refreshments and enjoy several evenings of musical entertainment. The programs are free and open to the general public.

The biggest event of the year takes place on July 1, 2009 with the Rockville Downtown Association partnering with the Vernon Parks & Recreation Department for the popular “July In The Sky”. Each year the program brings thousands of spectators to Henry Coe Park and to the historic downtown district. There will be numerous food concessioners, bands, orchestras, a ‘Push, Pull, Pedal, Patriotic Parade for children and families — all culminating with a grand fireworks display eminating from Fox Hill Tower and coordinated by the Vernon Parks & Recreation Department. The program and activities begin at 6:00 p.m. and conclude at approximately 10:00 p.m.

And finally, keep posted for the 2nd Annual Spectacular Car Show sponsored by the Rockville Downtown Association in the historic downtown district. The program will most likely take place in early September in association with the Tri-Town Cruzers.
